What Is the Best Color to Dye Dark Brown Hair

You heard it here first: 2020 is the year of the brunette. And, with some of the recent hair color changes we've seen make noise on social media, it's clear Hollywood is on board to take a walk on the dark side. There's a reason dark brown hair is so popular with celebrities: It's striking, no matter how you style it. Whether you're looking for a fresh take on your natural shade or are bored with your blonde, there's a gorgeous option for every skin tone.

"Brunettes don't get enough love. There are a lot of nuances to brown hair," says Brittany Van Dyke, a Redken artist, member of the Redken Styling Society, and owner of Reformation Studios in Joplin, MO.

Classic shades of dark brown hair like chestnut, dark honey, and cocoa are truly timeless; add a pop of gray, rose gold, or blue for a nod at a more ephemeral hair color trend.

As you're mulling over the perfect dark brown hair hue for you, the first thing to keep in mind is where it falls on the color spectrum:

  • Warm hair colors: Browns that reflect gold, orange, or red.

  • Cool hair colors: Browns that reflect blue, green, or purple.

  • Neutral hair colors: Browns that are neither overly warm nor cool but a perfect balance of both.

Next, check if your skin undertones are warm, cool, or somewhere in between:

  • Warm skin tones: Take a peep at the underside of your wrist: If you see mostly greenish veins, you have a warm skin tone. You likely also have yellow or olive skin and rich, gold-flecked eyes—and you'll tend to look best in warm brown hair colors.

  • Cool skin tones: If you have bluish veins, icy blue or green eyes, and lots of pink in your skin, you have cool skin undertones. Cool brown hair colors tend to look better on you, as they won't pull out the red in your complexion.

  • Neutral skin tones: You have bluish-green veins, and your skin isn't particularly rosy. Lucky you! Almost every shade of dark brown hair should look good on you.

Skin, of course, comes in a lovely spectrum of colors—which means you may find you fit more than one of the above categories. Also, keep in mind that everyone sees colors slightly differently, which is why it's important to schedule a consultation with your stylist and bring photos.

That said, don't feel pressured to stick to any of these "rules" at all.

"The cool thing about hair is anyone can pull anything off, as long as it works with your personal style," says Van Dyke. Talk with your stylist about ways your cut and color choice can best highlight your best features.

No matter what shade you choose, dark brown hair can look drab and dull if you forego the maintenance. Van Dyke recommends scheduling mini-appointments for a glaze every six to eight weeks to keep your color vibrant and fresh. Between appointments, be sure to use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner (she recommends Redken Extreme Shampoo or Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo) as well as a heat protectant.

Bronde hair (brown blonde) may have started as a dark shade of blonde — but it adapts gorgeously as a red-brown on a deep brunette base.
